Diversity among satellite glial cells in dorsal root ganglia of the rat BJMBR
Nascimento,R.S.; Santiago,M.F.; Marques,S.A.; Allodi,S.; Martinez,A.M.B..
Peripheral glial cells consist of satellite, enteric glial, and Schwann cells. In dorsal root ganglia, besides pseudo-unipolar neurons, myelinated and nonmyelinated fibers, macrophages, and fibroblasts, satellite cells also constitute the resident components. Information on satellite cells is not abundant; however, they appear to provide mechanical and metabolic support for neurons by forming an envelope surrounding their cell bodies. Although there is a heterogeneous population of neurons in the dorsal root ganglia, satellite cells have been described to be a homogeneous group of perineuronal cells. Our objective was to characterize the ultrastructure, immunohistochemistry, and histochemistry of the satellite cells of the dorsal root ganglia of 17 adult...

Expression of Vimentin and GFAP Protein of Cerebral Cortex and Its Impact on Corticogenesis Disorder as a Result of 2-Methoxyethanol International Journal of Morphology
Irnidayanti,Yulia; Darmanto,Win.
One of the plastic base material, widely used in the plastics industry in various countries, is a ester phthalate. These compounds will be oxidizedin the body to 2-methoxyethanol (2-ME). Effect of 2-ME on human health and the environment depends on the number, duration and frequency of exposure. 2-ME and its metabolites in the body can damage cells and tissues. The body can be exposed by 2-ME through the air, water and soil. Western blot results showed that the protein Vimentin was detectable in the control group at GD-11 to 17, meanwhile GFAP protein was detachable in the control group atGD- 12 to GD-18. After administration 2-ME, the expression of Vimentinprotein were changed, and started at GD- 12 up to GD-18. whereas the expression of GFAP protein...

Glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP): modulation by growth factors and its implication in astrocyte differentiation BJMBR
Gomes,F.C.A.; Paulin,D.; Moura Neto,V..
Intermediate filament (IF) proteins constitute an extremely large multigene family of developmentally and tissue-regulated cytoskeleton proteins abundant in most vertebrate cell types. Astrocyte precursors of the CNS usually express vimentin as the major IF. Astrocyte maturation is followed by a switch between vimentin and glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) expression, with the latter being recognized as an astrocyte maturation marker. Levels of GFAP are regulated under developmental and pathological conditions. Upregulation of GFAP expression is one of the main characteristics of the astrocytic reaction commonly observed after CNS lesion. In this way, studies on GFAP regulation have been shown to be useful to understand not only brain physiology but...

Histone demethylase retinoblastoma binding protein 2 regulates the expression of α-smooth muscle actin and vimentin in cirrhotic livers BJMBR
Wang,Q.; Wang,L.X.; Zeng,J.P.; Liu,X.J.; Liang,X.M.; Zhou,Y.B..
Liver cirrhosis is one of the most common diseases of Chinese patients. Herein, we report the high expression of a newly identified histone 3 lysine 4 demethylase, retinoblastoma binding protein 2 (RBP2), and its role in liver cirrhosis in humans. The siRNA knockdown of RBP2 expression in hepatic stellate cells (HSCs) reduced levels of α-smooth muscle actin (α-SMA) and vimentin and decreased the proliferation of HSCs; and overexpression of RBP2 increased α-SMA and vimentin levels. Treatment with transforming growth factor β (TGF-β) upregulated the expression of RBP2, α-SMA, and vimentin, and the siRNA knockdown of RBP2 expression attenuated TGF-β-mediated upregulation of α-SMA and vimentin expression and HSC proliferation. Furthermore, RBP2 was highly...

Immunohistochemical and Histopathological Changes in the Skin of Rats after Administration of Lead Acetate International Journal of Morphology
Sula,Bilal; Deveci,Engin; Özevren,Hüseyin; Ekinci,Cenap; Elbey,Bilal.
Lead acetate is a chemical compound. Sources of human exposure to this metal include many foods, drinking water and dust. The aim of this study was to determine the immunohistochemical and histopathological changes on the face skin after lead acetate application. Wistar Albino rats (180-200 g body weight) were divided into a controlled and lead acetate-exposed group. Rats received lead acetate at 500 ppm in their drinking water for 60 days. Both groups were fed with the same standard food, but lead acetate was added to the drinking water. During the experimental period, blood samples were drawn from the abdominal aorta of the anesthetised animals. At the end of exposure, body weight and blood lead levels were measured. Sections of rat facial skin were...

Thyroid hormone regulates protein expression in C6 glioma cells BJMBR
Trentin,A.G.; Alvarez-Silva,M..
Thyroid hormone (T3) is essential to normal brain development. Previously, we have shown that T3 induces cerebellar astrocyte proliferation. This effect is accompanied by alteration in glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) and fibronectin organization. In the present study, we report that the C6 glioma cell line, which expresses GFAP and is classified as an undifferentiated astrocytic cell type, is a target for T3 action. The C6 monolayers were treated with 50 nM T3 for 3 days, after which the cells were maintained for 2 days without medium changes. In C6 cells, T3 induced the expression of proteins of 107, 73 and 62 kDa. The hormone also up-regulated protein bands of 100 (+50%), 37 (+50%) and 25.5 kDa (+50%) and down-regulated proteins of 94 (-100%),...
